Delphi And Mobileye Team Up To Offer Self-Driving System By 2019
Many companies throughout the world are jumping on the self-driving vehicle bandwagon. Dutch company Mobileye and British company Delphi Automotive just announced a partnership to develop its own system for fully autonomous vehicles. The system should be ready to showcase at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and ready for production by 2019.
Kevin Clark, Delphi President and Chief Executive Officer, remarked, “This partnership will allow us to give our customers an increased level of automated capabilities faster and more cost effectively. The collective expertise of our two organizations will accelerate the creation of new approaches and capabilities that would likely not have been possible working alone. This is a win-win for both companies and our customers.”
The self-driving system will borrow technologies from each company. Delphi will bring its automated driving software algorithms that it acquired from Ottomatika, a company that was originally started by a Carnegie Mellon professor. This technology incorporates Path and Motion Planning features, and Delphi’s Multi-Domain Controller (MDC) with the full camera, radar and LiDAR suite.
Mobileye will bring its EyeQ 4/5 System on a Chip (SoC) with sensor signal processing, fusion, worldview generation and Road Experience Management (REM) system. The last-mentioned item will offer real-time mapping and vehicle localization. Both companies will work together to further develop sensor fusion technology.
Delphi and Mobileye have some stiff competition. Google is perhaps the leader in this race with their Toyota and Lexus hybrids. Tesla has recently been in the news for their Model X vehicles. And Apple has been closed lip about “Project Titan”, their self-driving system.
NVIDIA is even looking to jump in the game. It aims to provide the hardware to spread fully autonomous driving to the masses with their Drive PX 2 autonomous car processing engine. It will be interesting to see if Delphi and Mobileye will be able to reach their 2019 deadline and how their systems will compare to their competitors.
