ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q Gaming Monitor Electrifies With QHD, G-Sync, 165 Hz IPS Screen
There's innovation in the monitor market again. For several years, a top of the line monitor consisted of a 30-inch panel with a 2560x1600 resolution. That's not too shabby, but more recently, monitor makers have begun offering even better displays higher resolutions and fancy new features. Count ASUS among them.
ASUS today announced two new 27-inch monitors, the PG279Q and PG27AQ. At 27 inches, both are physically smaller than the 30-inch monitors that claimed flagship status for so long, but a closer look at each one reveals a few standout features that might make you want to upgrade, depending on what you're looking for.
One of the neatest things about the PG279Q is that it's rocking an In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel with a 144Hz refresh rate. If you pair it with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or higher graphics card, the panel can hit a refresh rate of up to 165Hz "to deliver unrivaled gaming smoothness and overall responsiveness," ASUS says. There's an integrated Turbo button that lets gamers switch between the two.
NVIDIA G-Sync support is also included. Gaming on a G-Sync panel is notably smoother than on regular monitors, so this feature alone is sure to be a big selling point among gamers.
The PG279Q uses an 8-bit panel that can display 16.7 million colors. It has a 1,000:1 contrast rato, 350 nits brightness, 4ms response time, 178-degree viewing angle (both horizontal and vertical), DisplayPort and HDMI inputs, two USB 3.0 ports. 3.5mm audio jack, and two 2W stereo speakers.
As for the PG27AQ, it boasts a 4K (3840x2160) resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate. It's using a 10-bit panel capable of displaying 1.07 billion colors and also supports G-Sync. Other features are the same except that it's rated brightness is slightly lower at 300 nits.
The ROG Swift PG279Q will be available next month for $700, while the PG27AQ will ship out sometime this quarter for a price that's yet to be determined.
