Apple iOS 9.3.2 Update Reportedly Bricking 9.7-inch iPad Pro Tablets With Error 56 Message

You can't get much work done on a bricked tablet built for professionals. Unfortunately that's the situation playing out for some 9.7-inch iPad Pro owners who installed Apple's over-the-air (OTA) iOS 9.3.2 update. Many of those affected by the issue report seeing an "Error 56" message imploring them to plug their iPad Pro into iTunes, which doesn't solve the problem, and nor does rebooting.

Apple's incremental update to iOS went out on Monday and was supposed to squash a handful of bugs, not introduce a show stopping one. Sometimes these things happen, but it looks particularly bad for Apple, which has been pitching its iPad Pro as an "uncompromising vision of personal computing for the modern world." Tim Cook took it a step further when the larger size iPad Pro first came out by questioning why anyone would buy a PC these days.

"I think if you're looking at a PC, why would you a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?," Cook said.

Easy answer—they're less prone to bricking, to name one of several advantages. And make no mistake, this isn't the first major annoyance to hit iPad Pro owners in the product family's relatively short existence. Back in November of last year, users complained of iPad Pro tablets freezing after extended charging sessions.

We're not trying to bash the iPad Pro. The point here is that Apple needs to do better if it wants customers to take its tablet seriously as a professional tool. Incidents like these are more than just an annoyance on the professional side, they're unacceptable.

Error 56 is one of several that point to a possible hardware issue. Apple's support page for such a thing suggests checking to see that you're using the latest version of iTunes, ensuring your USB cable isn't bad, and then trying twice more to perform a system restore.

If none of those work, you can try contacting Apple Support for more suggestions.
