Apple Begins Sales Of Unlocked SIM-Free iPhone 7 And iPhone 7 Plus

It has been a month since Apple started selling its flagship iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices, though up until now, you couldn't buy a SIM-free version that's factory unlocked. Now you can. The caveat (which isn't much of one, really) is that you have to purchase the SIM-free model direct from Apple, either from one of its retail locations or from its web store.

Pricing for an unlocked iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus runs the same as models that are tied to a specific wireless carrier. Here's how it breaks down:
  • iPhone 7 32GB: $649
  • iPhone 7 128GB: $749
  • iPhone 7 256GB: $849
  • iPhone 7 Plus 32GB: $769
  • iPhone 7 Plus 128GB: $869
  • iPhone 7 Plus 256GB: $969

Also like their carrier-specific counterparts, all five color options are available (Jet Black, Black, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold), with the Jet Black model only available with 128GB of 256GB of onboard storage. The savvy marketing move by Apple could entice users to buy a larger capacity phone than they need or want, whether it's a carrier-specific model or SIM-free.

Apple's SIM-free models support both CDMA and GSM networks and are compatible with all four major wireless carriers in the U.S., those being Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. They also have the ability to roam internationally on GSM networks in over 200 countries.

Almost all iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models ordered today will ship between October 17 and 19. The exception is the Jet Black version—the iPhone 7 model shows shipping in 3 to 5 weeks, and the iPhone 7 Plus in 6 to 8 weeks.
