Amazon Prime Brings Free Same-Day Delivery To 14 U.S. Metropolitan Areas

Among the numerous benefits and features of Amazon's Prime subscription service is a same-day delivery option, an amenity that's available in a dozen metro areas with planned expansions into San Diego and Tampa Bay. Normally the cost for near-instant gratification would cost Prime members $5.99 per delivery, though Amazon on Thursday dropped the fee.

That's a pretty amazing deal, at least for those who are lucky enough to live in one of the 14 areas where same-day delivery is offered. Location isn't the only caveat. Qualifying orders must placed before noon or they'll arrive the next day, and orders must total more than $35. Lastly, the number of items available for same-day delivery is over 1 million, far less than the 20 million items that qualify for free two-day shipping for Prime members.

Orders that qualify are guaranteed to arrive at doorsteps by 9 PM. For the delivery magic to happen, Amazon inks deals with local third-party couriers, though the company is hesitant to reveal how many delivery company's it works with.

Even with the caveats, this is a nice addition to Amazon's Prime service, and one that will get better over time as Amazon expands the number of products that qualify for same-day delivery. The company is also looking at expanding the number of territories it serves, though it's probably safe to assume that if you live in a remote area, same-day delivery isn't happening anytime soon.
