Apple and Samsung Will Attempt to Hug It Out in Mediation Over Patents
Sometimes it seems like Apple and Samsung spend as much time battling each other in court as they do in the labs innovating new features for mobile devices, features one company inevitably accuses the other of infringing upon. Is it possible for these two tech titans to simply get along and maybe even hammer out a licensing agreement that would give their lawyers some much needed rest?
That might be a bit much to ask for, but nevertheless, the two sides have agreed to meet with one another during a mediation session sometime between now and February 19, 2014. The underlying hope is that the two sides can come to some sort of patent agreement before locking horns in court (again) in March.
According to Reuters, Apple chief Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon will both be present during the meeting, each with their own army of lawyers. Both legal teams met with one another already back in January 6 to discuss settlement opportunities, and the fact that it's led to a second meeting with each company's head honcho is a positive sign. Then again, things could easily escalate like they did in Anchorman.
Apple's been the big winner thus far, with juries having awarded the Cupertino outfit around $930 million over the past two years. That's not a bad return on investment, given that Apple disclosed in December of last year that it's paid its leading outside law firm around $60 million to fight Samsung over patents.
