Intel has been relatively quiet on the solid state drive (SSD) front lately, though the company has likely been devoting a lot time and resources to its upcoming 3D XPoint storage architecture. However today, the company has unleashed a flood of new SSD products that cover a broad spectrum of usage scenarios. All of the new SSD products make use of 3D NAND, while the cheapest of them can be had for less than $100. Intel was an ARM license holder back in the early days of the personal digital assistant (PDA), and found its StrongARM and XScale chips in devices like the HP Compaq iPaq 5450 and other products of that ilk. But Intel jettisoned its ARM division in 2006 to focus on x86 processors, only to see a huge surge in ARM processor deployments with the rise of smartphones a few short years later. Intel is more than just a company that makes kickass desktop and notebook processors, and that was clearly on display today during the kickoff for the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), which is being held this week in San Francisco. Microsoft set off a nuclear blast in the PC enthusiast community this past January when it announced that it would cut off support for Intel Skylake-based machines running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on July 17th, 2017. This was ostensibly a move to force more users to upgrade to Windows 10, or else face the possibility of losing access to security updates. Intel, the world's largest producer of semiconductors, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Nervana Systems, a deep learning startup founded in 2014 and headquartered in San Diego, California. Intel has issued a voluntary but important safety recall on all Basis Peak watches. It issued the recall after fielding reports of the handy accessory overheating, which Intel says can result in burns or blisters on the skin. Intel says it's important that owners of any Basis Peak watch stop using it immediately and return it for a full refund. The overheating issue came to light in mid-June. At the time, Intel hoped it could fix the problem with a software update, but it wasn't able to make the issue go away without completely compromising the user experience. Intel shook things up when it announced that Kaby Lake would sit in between Skylake and Cannonlake, thus disrupting its tick-tock release cadence with a third generation processor family based on a 14nm manufacturing process. Now it appears that a fourth generation family of 14nm CPUs is on the roadmap, that being Coffee Lake, which will be behind Intel's first six-core processor for mainstream users. Apparently this is the season of leaked slides, at least for Intel, which seems to having trouble keeping inside information under wraps. It goes without saying that Intel's RealSense technology is very impressive, as it's able to accurately scan its environment and pass along loads of data to a computer for analysis or image recreation. A popular scenario with RealSense has been with the flight of drones; with the technology, these little flyers can navigate their surroundings without crashing into obstacles - an important feature for companies like Airbus. Lenovo is finding itself embroiled in yet another security scandal, and this time it revolves around the BIOS used in many of its PC systems. According to security researcher Dmytro Oleksiuk (aka Cr4sh), the vulnerability lies in the SystemSmmRuntimeRt UEFI driver component of Lenovo’s firmware. Oleksiuk claims that the exploit is present in every ThinkPad machine dating back as far as the X220 and as recently as the T450s.
