Over the weekend, we reported that Hewlett-Packard had made the unsavory move of essentially bricking scores of third-party ink cartridges that were in use in customers’ printers. HP’s rather brazen move was easy to track down since it programmed its printer firmware to throw up an error message on September 13th, meaning that thousands of customers experienced ink cartridge failures at the exact same time. HP is now coming clean about its move that had angered some customers. The company released a statement to the Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS), which is part of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting... Read more...
If you’ve been itchin' to get your hands on Hewlett-Packard’s flagship Elite x3 Windows 10 Mobile smartphone, the wait is going to be just a bit longer — two weeks longer in fact. HP originally stated that the smartphone would ship on August 29th, however, the company is now revising that date to September 12th. This is according to a new listing via the Microsoft Store, which is only offering the Elite x3 with the bundled Desk Dock. This brings the total price of the bundle to $799 (the phone costs $699 without the dock direct from HP). Like Microsoft’s Display Dock for the Lumia 950 and Lumia... Read more...
Google may be lighting up the education market with Chromebooks, but that isn’t stopping Microsoft and its partners from introducing low-cost Windows-based devices in response. This time around, Hewlett-Packard is hoping to raise a few eyebrows with its revamped “Stream” PC lineup. The new Stream family consists of three models: two notebooks and one convertible. The first offering is the new Stream 11, which as its name implies features an 11.6-inch anti-glare display (1366x768), measures just 18mm thin, and weighs in at 2.57 pounds. It’s powered by an Intel Celeron N3060 processor paired with... Read more...
Over the weekend, pricing for Hewlett-Packard’s Elite X3 Windows 10 Mobile smartphone leaked onto the web. The smartphone was listed at $799, which is a princely sum for a Windows 10 Mobile device. However, HP clarified things this morning with official pricing for the Elite X3. The $799 price tag is for the Elite X3 smartphone paired with the Desk Dock. If you just want the smartphone by itself, the price is a more palatable $699. However, even at $699, that’s still a lot of money for a flagship Windows 10 Mobile device. For comparison, Microsoft’s Lumia 950 XL launched late last year for $649... Read more...
In what can be considered another legal setback for Oracle, a jury has ordered the firm to pay Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) $3 billion in damages for its decision to stop developing database software for HP's Itanium-based servers in 2011. Oracle plans to appeal the verdict, but for now it's on the hook for a significant sum over a contract dispute. What this all boils down to is whether or not Oracle had a legal obligation to continue supporting Itanium after Intel indicated that its end of life was near as it began focusing more on its x86 microprocessors. Oracle feels strongly that it had... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard is struttin’ its stuff in the ultrabook class with the brand new EliteBook 1030, which slots in nicely between the lower-end EliteBook Folio 1020 and the range-topping EliteBook 1040. In fact, the EliteBook 1030 is actually based on the 12.2-inch CNC-machined aluminum body of the EliteBook Folio 1020, but ditches the 12.5-inch display and thick side bezels in favor of a 13.3-inch edge-to-edge display. That display is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass for added protection and can be configured with an optional QHD+ (3200x1800) screen resolution — a 1920x1080 display is standard. Under... Hewlett-Packed today unveiled a refresh Pavilion lineup that is geared towards general consumers. The new products encompass both all-in-ones and convertibles, the latter of which are available in a wide range of colors to fit your personal design tastes. Starting things off is the Pavilion x360, which has previously only been available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch form-factors. HP obviously sees the customer appeal of this design with a larger display, so the company is introducing new 15.6-inch screen size. HP says that this new generation of Pavilion x360s are 12 to 14 percent thinner than their... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard is stepping up its game in the professional all-in-one market with the introduction of its third generation Z1 G3 workstation. HP started off by working on the Z1 G3’s chassis, making this latest model both 47 percent smaller and 51 percent lighter than the previous generation. HP then went straight to work on the Z1 G3’s innards, adding in Intel Xeon processors (E3-1225 v5, E3-1245 v5, E3-1270 v5) and sixth generation Skylake processors. 64GB of memory comes standard with the Z1 G3 (four SO-DIMM slot are included), and businesses have their choice of ECC or non-ECC memory depending... Remember HP's weird looking Sprout PC introduced several months ago? Now there's a new version, the Sprout Pro, and this time around HP is focusing on education and enterprise customers who are in better position to utilize the PC's unique setup and capabilities. And by unique, we mean emphasizing its built-in projector and touch mat over the standard keyboard and mouse combo. If you strip away its special features, the Sprout Pro is a capable all-in-one PC with a 23-inch display featuring a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution and 10-point touch support. It also boasts a 6th generation Intel Core... Read more...
Microsoft’s Surface and Surface Pro family of tables have elicited a number of copycat designs over the years. Most recently, we’ve seen Apple take a stab at the Surface Pro form-factor with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro — a category that Apple CEO Tim Cook just a few years ago likened to pairing a toaster with a refrigerator. HP is the latest to take a stab at a “tablet with a kickstand” with its Spectre x2. But whereas most previous OEMs have attempted to go after the Surface Pro, the Spectre x2 seems squarely aimed at the more affordable Surface 3. You won’t find high-powered Core i5 or Core i7 processors... Read more...
You may have a collection of hilarious (and comfortable) t-shirts, but if you work at HP, you better stock up on more professional looking attire. Yes, that even applies to programmers grinding a living behind a keyboard, who were among the 100,000 people HP reportedly sent a memo to reminding them of the "smart casual" dress code. Anonymous sources told The Register that the memo was sent out because the suits at HP feared that customers visiting the company wouldn't take well to seeing R&D engineers look anything less than professional. Forget for a moment that casual attire is both a trend... Read more...
Back in early December, Hewlett-Packard pulled the wraps off two interesting new ultrabooks: the svelte EliteBook Folio 1020 and Folio 1020 SE. The Intel Core M-powered Folio 1020 SE was the real stunner, however, with its QHD display, and magnesium-lithium alloy and carbon fiber chassis. But now that Windows 10 is just over two weeks away from its retail launch, HP is preparing another SKU for its EliteBook Folio 1020 series. This time around, HP is adding some audio enhancements to its ultrabook. Since the addition of Beats speakers is out of the question now that Apple owns the rights to the... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard’s popular Pavilion x2 hybrid has received a pretty thorough makeover in anticipation of July 29 release of Windows 10. Like before, the Pavilion x2 features a 10-inch tablet which can be docked with an included keyboard. However, HP has updated the design of Pavilion x2 with a magnetic latch connector that allows the user to easily attach and detach the keyboard. The tablet alone weighs 1.29 pounds, while the weight nearly doubles to 2.48 pounds with the keyboard attaches. The tablet itself is 9.65mm thick, and swells to 16.75mm with the keyboard attached. Under the hood, you’ll... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard first released its rather unorthodox Sprout PC back in late October with a price tag of $1,899. The device featured a 23-inch touch screen display that was topped with an overhead DLP projector which beams content down to a 20-inch, 20-point capacitive touch-sensitive mat. And if that doesn’t sound complex enough, there’s also Intel’s highly capable Real Sense 3D camera and a HP’s high-resolution 14.6MP camera thrown in for good measure. When this delightful mix of hardware is working in concert, you can use the mat as a touch keyboard, scan in objects and manipulate them on the... Read more...
