Sony Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra Unlocked Smartphones, SmartWatch 2 Now Available For Preorder In U.S.

Sony’s latest Xperia smartphones, the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra, look rather fetching but have been frustratingly unavailable in the U.S. until now. Sony now has them on its U.S. website for preorder, where you can snag the Smartwatch 2 ($199.99), Xperia Z1 ($649.99), and Xperia Z Ultra ($649.99).

The Xperia Z1 offers a 20.7MP camera and rocks a quad-core Qualcomm MSM8274 (2.2 GHz) processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, USB 2.0, microUSB, and a 5-inch (1920x1080) display. It’s also designed to be waterproof and dust-resistant, which is a big bonus for many users.

The Xperia Z Ultra features a larger 6.4-inch (1920x1080) shatterproof display that lets users “write” on it with a stylus, but otherwise it’s strikingly similar to the Xperia Z1--they share the same processor, RAM, storage, and more. Both run Android 4.2.

Sony’s SmartWatch 2 is its second-generation smartwatch. Based on Android, the device is a companion to a smartphone and syncs over Bluetooth to let you receive and view notifications; work with your texts, email, calendar, social media, and phone calls; and control your music.

Sony is selling unlocked versions of the Xperia phones, so although you can’t get one subsidized on contract (those $649.99 price tags are what they are), you do have some freedom with your carrier options, which isn’t a terrible thing.
