Windows 10 Anniversary Update Installed By 76 Percent Of Windows 10 Users

Microsoft has faced criticism on numerous occasions over its aggressive tactics in getting users to both upgrade to Windows 10 and, more recently, install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but its efforts are paying off. The latest figures from AdDuplex, a cross-promotion ad network for Windows Phone and Windows Store apps, shows that the latest version of Windows 10 is now installed on roughly three quarters of Windows 10 PCs.

While not as pervasive as the Anniversary Update on mobile, where AdDuplex says the penetration rate has reached "critical mass," being installed on 76.6 percent of Windows 10 PCs is, as the ad network notes, "still a pretty solid number" and one that should entice developers to start taking advantage of the new features baked into the OS.

Windows 10

This is a big jump from a month ago when Windows 10 version 1607 was calculated to be installed on just 34.5 percent of Windows 10 PCs. The ad network doesn't explain why there was such a big jump from September to October, but if the data is anywhere near accurate, it can be considered a win for Microsoft. It might also reinforce Microsoft's tactics for getting users to upgrade, such as using nag screens.

While the Anniversary Update seems to have gained a recent head of steam, it remains to be seen if Windows 10 as a whole is following the same trend. From August to September, Netmarketshare showed Windows 10 in a state of stagnation, going from a 22.99 percent share of the market to 22.53 percent. StatCounter noted a similar trend, only with slightly different numbers—24.43 percent in August and 24.42 percent in September.

Getting back to AdDuplex's figures, the ad network shows HP being the most active manufacturer of Windows 10 PCs by accounting for 21.9 percent of Windows 10 systems sold. Lenovo, which is the top seller of PCs overall, is tied with Dell in second place with both at 11.6 percent. After that it is Asus (11 percent), Acer (10.1 percent), Toshiba (5.2 percent), Microsoft (2.8 percent), Samsung (2.5 percent), Sony (1.5 percent), and MSI (1.5 percent).
