Nintendo Spokesman Shoots Down Android Pipe Dream For ‘NX’ Console

Just as quickly as we were warming to the idea of Nintendo’s next generation gaming console running the Android operating system, our hopes have now been dashed. The denial came swiftly, with a Nintendo spokesman stating, “There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX.”

That’s about as strong as a denial as you would ever here from a Nintendo. The company usually doesn’t take the time to respond to such rumors (just like Apple). But the original Japanese-language report that its next generation console would join forces with Google’s dominant mobile operating system was apparently enough to garner a "That's all I can stands,I can't stands no more" response from Nintendo.

We’re disappointed to hear that the Android makeover isn’t happening, because the original report seemed to make so much sense. Nintendo has become an also-ran in the current generation console battle, while Microsoft and Sony duke it out for top honors with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 respectively. Opening up its platform to Android would give developers more freedom to deliver their games to the NX console while still allowing Nintendo to offer differentiation with platform-specific titles using its IP.

So while a Nintendo-produced, Android-packin’ console doesn’t appear to be in the cards anytime soon, you can still salivate over NVIDIA’s SHIELD which brings Tegra X1 power to set-top console gaming with a starting price of $199.
