It’s been rumored for months that Microsoft would be unveiling a new Windows 10-powered all-in-one flagship. We’ve seen patent drawings, have covered specs leaks, and have gotten a few hints from Microsoft. Well, Microsoft's ever-exuberant Panos Panay today announced what we’ve all been waiting for: the Surface Studio.

The forged aluminum Surface Studio is a gorgeous all-in-one that features a 28-inch PixelSense touch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and 192 pixels per inch over a 4500x3000 resolution (or a little under 5K). According to Panay, this is the thinnest LCD display ever built at just 1.3mm thick.

As for specs, you’ll find Intel 6th Gen (Skylake) Core i7 or Core i5 processors, up to 32GB of memory, 1 or 2TB hybrid drives (SSD and HDD) and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M or GTX 965M GPU. Surprisingly, Microsoft didn’t go with NVIDIA's Pascal architecture but it may not have been ready for prime time when Surface Studio was in development. When it comes to the connectivity, you’ll find four USB 3.0 ports on the back, GbE, mini DisplayPort and a Secure Digital slot.

But just like Surface Book wowed us by being more than just a notebook when it was announced last year (its screen detached from its keyboard base to become a tablet), the Surface Studio has a trick up its sleeve as well. The display can collapse down, bringing it closer to your desk with a 20-degree drafting angle using its zero-gravity hinge, giving you the ability to “create” with aplomb. According to Panay, this design "Turn[s] your desk into a studio."

The display can then interact with the Surface Dial, which is a radial input accessory that incorporates haptic feedback. When placed on the display, a radial menu sprouts out around the device allowing you to adjust things like ink color or thickness. It can also be used as a standalone device, allowing you to adjust the volume, brightness, or flip through pages in a document. Surface Dial also works with the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book.

And of course, you can also use the Surface Pen, which has been optimized to nearly eliminate lag when inking. And Microsoft has amped up its palm rejection to ensure that when you lean against the display, that only the input from your pen is recognized.
