Insanely Rugged Mobile Battery Pack Survives Shotgun Blast, Stirs Up Interest On Kickstarter

It never hurts to bring along a portable charger when you're out hiking, camping, or otherwise seeking fun and adventure. The more adventurous you are, the more rugged your gear should be, and Dark Energy's Poseidon mobile battery pack is about as tough as it gets. How tough? Well, it can withstand a shotgun blast from 35 feet away.

We don't recommend putting yourself in situations where shotguns might be aimed in your direction, but that's not the point here. Dark Energy posted a video of its Poseidon surviving a shotgun blast to demonstrate on Kickstarter just how tough this compact charger is.

Poseidon

They're billing it as the first military grade and waterproof mobile battery. It has the maximum rating on the IP standard, IP68, indicating that it's both dustproof and waterproof. It's also shockproof, making it a great travel companion for rugged terrain.

Inside the durable device is an 8,000 mAh battery, enough to charge an average smartphone to full capacity three to five times over. It features a dual-USB output system to rapidly charge up to two devices at the same time. Other features will depend on which stretch goals it manages to reach.

As of right now, nearly 550 backers have pledged over $78,000, pushing the project passed its $50,000 goal with still 23 days to go. That gives it plenty of time to reach its first stretch goal -- at $100,000, Dark Energy will add a carabiner and removable nylon strap.

At the $150,000 mark, the team will increase the charging output from 2.1 amps to 3.1 amps, and at $300,000, it will come with a built-in LED light.
