Google Posts List Of Top Android Apps In 2014, Shows Desire To Get Fit

We're fast approaching the finish line for 2014, and with less than three weeks remaining before it's time to pin up a new calendar, it's a good time to reflect on the past 12 months. Google made it easy for Android users to do exactly that -- the search giant posted a list of the most downloaded Android apps, games, movies, music, news, and books of 2014 on Google Play, and there are a few surprises on the list.

As you would expect, apps like Facebook, Netflix, TripAdvisor, and Panodra made the list in their respective categories (Social, Entertainment, Travel, and Music). However, the fastest growing app category of the year was Health & Fitness, with MyFitnessPal rising to the top of its section. That being the case, perhaps all these smartwatch and smartband makers are onto something.

Google Play Games

In the Games category, Candy Crush Saga skyrocketed to the top, followed by Don't Tap The White Tile, Farm Heroes Saga, Subway Surfers, and Clash of Clans. Collectively speaking, Android gamers unlocked 3.5 billion achievements in 2014.

The Movie of the Year turned out to be Frozen -- no big surprise, nor is it shocking to find out that The Walking Dead won the TV Show of the Year category. Toy Story took the Comeback Movie category, while the recently departed Robin Williams was the most searched actor on Google Play.

Interestingly, soundtracks proved to be the fastest growing genre in the music category, which would explain Frozen: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack taking the Album of the Year award. Song of the Year went to Dark Horse by Katy Perry, while Fancy by Iggy Azalea was dubbed Song of the Summer.

What's been your favorite app of the year?
