5.7-inch Galaxy A8 Is Samsung's Thinnest Smartphone To Date
Samsung's prior infatuation with plastic and polycarbonate shells didn't stop the company from using premium materials in the design of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Plus, and going forward, it looks like we expect more of the same. That's certainly true of the Galaxy A8, a new handset that is now official. It's also incredibly thin at just 5.9mm.
The translated tagline for the Galaxy A8 is "Fall in love with slim." It's a point of focus for the handset, which is the slimmest phone in Samsung's stable, at least at its thinnest point -- there's a disclaimer pointing out that the Galaxy A8's body is non-uniform and that the 5.9mm claim represents the thinnest measurement. Even so, from the pictures we've seen, this is one svelte device.
What's not so small is the Super AMOLED display -- it checks in at 5.7 inches with a ho-hum 1920x1080 resolution and is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 System-on-Chip (four cores clocked at 1.57GHz and the other half at 1GHz).
Other features include 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage expandable via microSD (supports up to 128GB), 5-megapixel front camera, 16-megapixel rear shooter, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, 4G LTE connectivity, fingerprint reader, and a sizable 3,050 mAh battery. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Serviceable, though not a flagship collection of parts of and features by any measure.
Samsung's taking pre-orders for the Galaxy A8 in China. There's no word yet on whether there are plans to ship the handset to other markets.
