After much anticipation, Sony has taken the veil off of its latest flagship, called Z5 Premium. At the same time, it's also unveiled two additional variants: the Z5 and Z5 Compact. We reported on the Z5 Premium earlier this week, sparked by a YouTube video from a French website that got posted a wee bit too early. All of the specs that came from that video have turned out to be accurate. This 5.5-inch flagship does in fact sport a 4K resolution, which I still can't help but find needless. It's been said that the human eye can't distinguish pixels when the resolution is higher than ~300 ppi, and... Read more...
The Uncharted saga is coming to a close, and Sony has now given us a firm date for the beginning of the end. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will launch exclusively on the PlayStation 4 March 18th 2016. This news comes after Sony announced in March that the title would be delayed until Spring 2016, as the “game [became] much more ambitious than we originally envisioned.” Now that the finish line is in sight, Sony is happy to deliver a few details on the three physical versions of the game that will be available for gamers. The fist, of course, will be your bog standard edition which will give you just... Read more...
Sony's upcoming Z5 flagship smartphone looks to live up to that denotation. Officially called the Z5 Premium, this high-end offering is set to offer a fingerprint sensor on the side, a mammoth 23 megapixel camera with top-rate focusing capabilities, and even happens to be waterproof. Oh - and let's not ignore the one spec that's going to turn most heads: the Z5 Premium also features a 4K display. Let's put things into perspective. Most higher-end phones today offer a 1080p resolution, and on a 5.5-inch model, that gives us a ppi of ~400. Sony's phone, by offering a ridiculous (and I do mean ridiculous)... Read more...
Here at Hot Hardware, we come across a lot of interesting aerial drones. We recently reviewed the Parrot Bebop Drone and brought you news on DJI’s Phantom Standard 3 drone, which features a gimbal-mounted camera that can shoot 2.7K HD video. The drone market is flooded with entries from numerous, highly capable companies, but what happens when a storied company known for its consumer electronics devices steps into the drone fray? Well, you get the Aerosense, a drone company that was formed by Japanese robotics firm ZMP and Sony. Aerosense’s latest product, however, isn’t your run-of-the-mill quad-copter... Read more...
Sony continually patches its PlayStation 4 console, and if you want to help test future firmware updates, you now can. Ahead of its next major system software update, Sony has opened up a beta program and is inviting PS4 owners to sign up for sneak peeks at what's in the pipeline, and also to provide feedback on things that need improvement. A PS4 console is required (no surprise there), and you'll also need an Internet connection and a master account. Sub-accounts are not allowed to participate in the program. Sony also says to make sure you're a member of its PlayStation forums so that you can... Read more...
Sony on Thursday announced its second generation fitness wearable, the SmartBand 2. Described as a "multi-sensor lifelogger," the SmartBand 2 combines an accelerometer with new heart rate sensors that work together to monitor your pulse and heart rate variability so that you can gauge your excitement and stress levels throughout the day. It also provides insights on your sleep patterns. Like the version that came before it, there's no display on the SmartBand 2. Instead, you're alerted to things like calls, messages, emails, Twitter updates, and other notifications through vibrations and three... Read more...
There’s no question that Sony’s PlayStation 4 is walking away from the Xbox One in the console sales race this generation. This is despite the fact that Sony has held the line on pricing, keeping its 500GB console at the $399 price point, while Microsoft effectively instituted a $100 price cut by ditching the Kinect camera, and later implemented a permanent price drop to $349 (not to mention numerous crazy bundle deals). But the sizable sales lead that the PS4 has over the Xbox One is of little concern to Microsoft’s Xbox execs. Rather, the company is more focused on improving the gaming experience... Read more...

Anyone who possesses a valid Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license is eligible to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. That includes owners of Sony VAIO machines, though if you're rocking a VAIO, you're strongly urged to put off upgrading. Sony says it hasn't worked out proper drivers for Windows 10 just yet and is asking owners to be patient for at least a couple of months."Although Microsoft is offering the Windows 10 upgrade, it is strongly recommended that you wait to install it until the drivers and installation instructions are available for your VAIO PC," Sony warns on its support page for VAIO systems.Sony's... Summer is almost over, and to add insult to injury, Sony is getting ready to hike prices in the U.K. for its PlayStation Plus subscription service. The new prices will go into effect September 1, though if you pony up for an annual subscription, you'll be immune to the higher rates  -- it's the single month and three-month subscriptions that are going up. Though Sony didn't come right out and say it, we suspect this move is intended to encourage yearly subscriptions. "We are dedicated to bringing PlayStation Plus members the best possible service with the most compelling content," Sony said... Read more...
Sony is expanding its PlayStation Vue service to the Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami-Fort Lauderdale areas, the company announced. If you're scratching your head wondering what in the flip PlayStation Vue is, don't feel bad -- it's a relatively new offering that's only available in select areas, and one that hasn't seen any kind of heavy marketing efforts.PlayStation Vue is a streaming web TV service for cord cutters (it doesn't require a cable or satellite TV subscription) available through PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Sony launched the service earlier this year, though unlike Sling TV,... Read more...
Sony on Monday unveiled a couple of new handsets that will appeal to this narcissistic generation of selfie takers. They include the Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5, both of which sport high-quality 13-megapixel front-facing cameras, negating the need to flip the phone around to take a decent shot of yourself. "We are pleased to present two new products that highlight Sony’s advances in camera technology," said Tony McNulty, Vice-President, Value Category Business Management at Sony Mobile Communications. "We understand that camera capabilities are important to smartphone users, so we ensured that... Read more...
China is finally ending a ban on gaming consoles that has proven to be a real hindrance to companies like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. But before you ask, “I thought China already lifted the ban?” you have to realize that Chinese regulatory agencies only allowed consoles to be sold within the country if they were manufactured within the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. Now that Chinese officials have had a change of heart, manufacturers (both foreign and domestic) are free to build and sell their consoles anywhere within the country. Needless to say, console manufacturers are elated at the possibility... Read more...
Many Android users I know like to stick with Google's official Nexus phones, and every single one of them cite the same reasons for it: a clean user interface. It's true; Nexus devices are the go-to for experiencing Android as it's meant to be, similar to how Microsoft sells "Signature" desktops and notebooks that deliver the experience it wants you to have. Ultimately, both Microsoft and Google have the same goal with their respective lines: that lack of bloat. Well, it seems like Sony might be catching onto the perks of this. In a new blog post, the company writes that it is going to be... Read more...
