Volkswagen is taking a kitchen sink approach to in-car infotainment technology for its new vehicles. All 2016 VWs will include both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so customers can have a solid experience regardless of their smartphone brand. Android Auto“With the new MIB II infotainment platform, Volkswagen’s next generation of Car-Net connected services brings to market one of the most comprehensive suites of connectivity features ever available in an automobile,” said Volkswagen of America president and CEO Michael Horn. “As the people car brand, we knew that it was important to democratize these... With as fast as new smartphones come out, it's a scary proposition to consider purchasing the latest and greatest months after its launch. After all, it's not as though prices immediately begin to go into a decline; they stay locked in right up to the launch of the next model. T-Mobile understands what this frustration can feel like, so it's offering iPhone fans one sweet deal. Via a humorous and straight-forward YouTube video, T-Mobile CEO John Legere tells us why his company's latest deal is worth paying attention to, and he's got a good point. It's no secret that a new iPhone is en route, so... Read more...
More than 41,000 fake iPhones have been scooped up by Chinese authorities in a massive bust, thanks to a tip from U.S. officials. Beijing police picked up at least nine people believed to be involved in the operation, which involved a small factory posing as an electronics retailer. It’s not clear where the fake iPhones were being shipped, though the tip from American officials could indicate that some of the phones reached the U.S. That’s likely a question Beijing authorities will be putting to the couple who ran the counterfeit operation. The two apparently had as many as six assembly lines,... Read more...
Apple first announced the Apple Watch at the tail end of the iPhone keynote last September, but didn’t get around to actually releasing the wearable (in extremely limited quantities) to customers until April of this year. Since its initial launch, Apple has slowly ramped production and orders to the point where the initial 6- to 8-week delivery window has shrunk to two days with free shipping or one day with expedited shipping. Now that supply issues are for the most part worked out, Apple is ready to take the next step: opening up sales to one of its largest U.S. retail partners. Best Buy announced... Read more...
Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing posted an official trailer for Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, an upcoming documentary that details the life of the late Apple co-founder. Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney directed the flick, though whether or not the movie's portrayal of Jobs is accurate is a topic of debate. This is the same documentary that premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival earlier this year. Several Apple employees were in attendance, include Eddie Cue, the company's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, who called the film "mean spirited"... Read more...
Just as you can't walk into a McDonald's and order a Whopper, you can no longer waltz into one of Apple's retail stores or visit the company's online shop and pick up a Nest thermostat, which is owned by rival Google. They've been yanked from store shelves, both physical and virtual, to make room for products that tap into Apple's own HomeKit home automation technology.Apple also kicked two other Nest products to the curb, at least for now -- the Nest Cam, a Wi-Fi video camera that lets you see your home on your phone, and the Next Protect, a second generation smoke and CO alarm that talks that... In late May, Hyundai became the first automaker to officially support Android Auto with a software update to its 2015 (and newer) Sonata midsize sedans. At the time, Hyundai said that it would add support for Apple CarPlay at a later date. This week, however, Honda announced that is refreshed 2016 Honda Accord, a direct competition for the Sonata, is debuting with both Android Auto and CarPlay support fresh out of the box. CarPlay requires iOS 7.1 or higher, while Android Auto requires Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher. Both allow you to mirror functions from your smartphone like texting, navigation,... Read more...
It seems these days that Microsoft is giving more attention to competing platforms like iOS and Android than it does to its own Windows Phone (soon to be Windows 10 Mobile) devices. Joe Belfiore, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of the Operating Systems Group, even had to explain to Windows Phone users back in early January that it hadn’t abandoned its flock despite the fact that it gave iOS and Android users better versions of Office. With that in mind, Microsoft has launched its new Send email app for the iPhone (Microsoft says that Send is “coming soon” to Android and Windows Phone). Send... Read more...
Hardworking iOS app developers are finally getting a reprieve from busybody app reviewers thanks to a policy update from Apple. Up until this week, users running beta versions of iOS software have been able to leave reviews for apps in the App Store with reckless abandon. It doesn’t take long to see why this has been a problem. Developers that have created apps for an existing, stable platform (i.e., iOS 8) have been penalized by beta testers leaving negative reviews for their apps running on beta versions of the operating system (i.e., iOS 9). It’s common sense that beta testers might experience... Read more...
Wall Street is a fickle bunch; they build you up only to knock you down just as quickly. Such is the case for Apple, which this afternoon reported its fiscal Q3 2015 earnings. By almost any account, Apple had a stellar quarter, reporting revenue of $49.6 billion (a 33 percent increase year-over-year) and net profit of $10.7 billion ($1.85 per diluted share). Gross margin also was up slightly year-over-year, increasing from 39.4 percent to 39.7 percent. In a telling reminder that Apple depends heavily on markets other than the U.S. for the bulk of its revenue, the company reported that an incredible... Read more...
If Apple wants to quell speculation about its rumored efforts to develop an electric car, the consumer electronics behemoth is going about it the wrong way. Apple hired quality manager Doug Betts from Fiat Chrysler this month and is keeping mum about his role in the company. This comes after Apple hired a key researcher from Mercedes-Benz earlier this year.  Apple is working on a car-related project known as CarPlay, but the industry has been awash in speculation that the company is working on more than just a complex entertainment system for your vehicle. The rumored car project is believed... Read more...
Does Xiaomi's Mi 4 handset bear a resemblance to Apple's iPhone 5? You betcha, and Xiaomi boss Hugo Barra isn't ashamed to admit as much. However, he's not willing to concede that Xiaomi is stealing Apple's designs, as famed design chief (for Apple) Jony Ive once alleged when stating the similarities between products isn't "flattery," but "theft." Chinese startup Xiaomi has risen in the ranks as a maker of premium Android smartphones that sell for less than what Samsung charges. And like Samsung, Apple takes issue with Xiaomi's designs. Samsung was once sued for copying the look and feel of Apple's... Read more...
Apple and Samsung don’t always see eye-to-eye, and we have years of countless lawsuits to backup that statement. However, every once in a while, the two companies come together to push innovative initiatives that help to advance the tech products that we use everyday. The proposed e-SIM standard is one of those ideas that sounds great on paper, and could turn out to be a huge boon for customers in the real world. An e-SIM is essentially an embedded SIM card that is not accessible by the end-user. But that shouldn’t concern you, as the e-SIM would allow you to choose wireless carriers within software... We reported last week that Apple was set to unveil a next generation iPod touch with a faster, 64-bit processor (the current iPod touch is using the old-as-dirt A5 SoC). We had expected that Apple would use the 2013-era A7 processor for the redheaded stepchild of the iOS family, but the folks from Cupertino, California surprised us with an even more potent SoC. The new 2015 iPod touch features the current generation A8 processor, which is used in Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The arrival of the A8 also means that the M8 motion coprocessor is also along for the ride, which allows the iPod... Read more...
