The successor to the 5160 and 8600...

The notebook is cased in what seems to be made of Polycarbonate/ABS plastic composite. The white borders seem to be made of a hard acrylic plastic, while the bottom seems to be made of a stiffer carbon fiber composite material. This chassis is basically what the 700M is based on, just enlarged for the larger notebook profile. Compared to the 8600, this feels like a sturdier design, and probably can withstand a few drops here and there just fine (something we don't plan to try out...). The silver hue is a noticeably brighter shade than that of the 8600 or the Latitude line, and it is polished up like the white plastic borders. As far as scratches go, it is about as resistant as previous Dell notebooks we have seen.

Similar to the 700M, the notebook can be opened via a single clip in the front, which disengages two hooks holding the lid down.
