Zotac Expands Solid State Drive Line With 'Premium' Label SSDs In 240GB And 480GB Capacities

We had to look it up, but sure enough, Zotac has dabbled in the solid state drive market before, though not extensively. Up until today, its sole SSD offering was a 120GB drive with up to 520MB/s and 170MB/s of sequential read and write performance, respectively. And now? The company best known for pumping out mini PCs is fleshing out its SSD line with a new Premium label series.

Don't get too caught up in the branding, they're Premium by name but a bit pedestrian compared to today's ultra fast NVMe M.2-based SSDs. In that regard, Zotac is unfashionably late to the high-end storage party with a pair of drives that plug into SATA ports, though if that's what you're after, Zotac's Premium Edition SSDs take residence at the upper end of the spectrum.

Two capacities comprise the new SSD line, 240GB and 480GB. Both offer the same 520MB/s sequential read rating as the aforementioned 120GB, but write performance is significantly improved to the tune of 500MB/s. Not the fastest we've seen in SATA 6Gbps territory, but not too shabby, either.

These new drives use Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND flash memory powered by a robust quad-core Phison controller that supports things like end-to-end data protection, Smart ECC, Smart Refresh, power fail protection, static and dynamic wear leveling, bad block management, and TRIM.

Zotac didn't say when these new drives will be available or for how much, though we suspect they'll be fairly affordable. They'll also carry a 3-year warranty.
