Super Villain Elon Musk Would Create Two ‘Fusion Stars’ Above Mars Instead Of Nuking Surface, To Make It Habitable

One of the most famous scenes in the Star Wars saga is when Luke Skywalker stands on his home planet Tatooine and watches a double sunset. If SpaceX founder and CEO of Tesla Motors Elon Musk gets his wish, a similar scene could play out for a future generation on Mars, but first we have to hurl nukes in the planet's direction.

The plan to nuke Mars to make it habitable for humans earned Musk his "super villain" designation, though he's not looking to decimate the planet's surface. Following the discovery of salt water flowing on Mars, Musk clarified his plans for heating up Mars with nuclear bombs. What he wants to do is send a pair of fusion bombs in the sky above Mars, which would explode every few seconds creating a pair of tiny pulse suns.

"What I was talking about was having a series of very large, by our standards, but very small by calamity standards, essentially having two tiny pulsing suns over the poles," Musk said during an event for SolarCity, his energy company. "They're really above the planet. Not on the planet."

Mars isn't suited for human life at the moment in part because the atmosphere is too thin and too cold. What Musk wants to do is invoke climate change with a technology that doesn't yet exist. As for wanting two suns over Mars instead of just one, Musk says it would aid with heating the planet.

"Then you would gasify frozen carbon dioxide, thicken the atmosphere, and warm up the water and all of that would have a greenhouse effect. Having a cascading effect to continue warming up the planet," Musk elaborated.

In other words, create an atmosphere that's more like Earth's. When the suns "blink out," Musk would simply send more fusion bombs over the poles.
