Sony Announces Android 5.0 Lollipop Rollout For Xperia Z3 And Z3 Compact

The number of Android devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop is comparatively low, as it's been a bit slow going for the latest version of Google's open-source operating system. That's typically the case when Google releases a major new version of Android, though for Lollipop, we're now at the point where upgrades are being announced at a steady clip. Enter Sony, which is starting to roll out Lollipop for its Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets.

Sony's over-the-air (OTA) update to Android 5.0 will reach devices in the Nordics and Baltics first. Other markets and more Xperia Z Series products will follow suit beginning around two weeks from now. Which ones? Sony had previously said that Lollipop would eventually be available for the entire premium Z Series, including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

The update will bring Xperia owners a fresh, streamline look based on Google's Material Design, but still retaining Sony's minimalistic approach to interface and application design. That includes a revamped notifications and locked screen with fully customizable settings.

Lollipop also introduces multi-user profiles and guest mode. That means you don't have to stress over sharing your handset with little Billy. Alternately, you can setup separate configurations for work and play. Speaking of which, Sony says the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact will become part of the
Android for Work ecosystem following the update to Android 5.0.
