Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet Gains An Aluminum Enclosure, 64GB Storage Option

Amazon is introducing this premium aluminum body at the same price as the existing plastic models, with a starting price of $229. The 32GB model will set you back $259.99, while a new 64GB storage option is priced at $289.99. And as always, you can further expand storage (up to an additional 128GB) with the included microSD slot.

While the aluminum body and 64GB storage options are new, everything else about the Fire HD 10 remains the same. That means you’ll get a MediaTek MT8135 quad-core processor with PowerVR G6200 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 10.1-inch 1280x800 IPS display, 5MP rear-facing camera, 720p front camera, stereo speakers with Dolby Audio, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and up to 8 hours of battery life. Running the show is Amazon’s fork of Android 5.0 Lollipop: Fire OS 5 “Bellini”.

Even with the more premium exterior, this is still a budget device at the core, as witnessed by the use of the MediaTek processor and mediocre screen resolution for such a large display (we would expect at least 1080p resolution for a screen that size, but we digress). You must also realize that while this is still an Android tablet at heart, it’s mainly a launch vehicle to allow of Amazon’s services. That means you won’t have easy access to Google Play or even popular apps like Chrome or Gmail (although that won’t stop you from side loading the apps or hacking the device to enable Google Play support).
