Anyone who's been playing with PCs for awhile has probably heard of AVAST Software, makers of the self-titled and popular free antivirus software heralding from the Czech Republic. AVAST is generally considered one of the 'good guys' in the fight against malware, and given the company's track record, it's no surprise that it's avast! Free Antivirus collected yet another VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, an independent testing laboratory that holds AV applications accountable to their claims.

The freebie security software scored a perfect 100 percent in Virus Bulletin's 'Reactive and Proactive' (RAP) malware sample, and did so without recording any annoying false positives.

"Detection rates were excellent, with some superb scores in the Response sets and the reactive parts of the RAP sets," Virus Bulletin commented.

avast! Free Antivirus scans and blocks viruses and spyware, and supports remote assistance "from a geek friend." In addition to its free security application, AVAST Software also offers/sells avast! Pro Antivirus starting at $40 for a single year of protection, and avast! Internet Security Suite, which is currently marked down to also start at $40 for 1-year.
