AMD Releases New Catalyst Drivers for Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Microsoft's Windows 8 Consumer Preview has attracted over 1 million downloads since it was made available to the public yesterday, and there's no reason to believe that number won't continue to grow. It isn't the only piece of Windows 8 software out there, however. To ensure smooth sailing with your Radeon graphics card (if you own one), AMD has released special Catalyst drivers specifically for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Some of the highlights of the new drivers include native Stereo 3D support for full-screen and windowed gaming, a Unified Video API, optimized screen rotation, improved sleep/resume performance, and optimized power consumption, according to AMD's release notes.

The special drivers also support AMD's Eyefinity technology, multiple graphics cards in a CrossFire configuration, and other goodies. One thing to note: AMD's Radeon HD 7900 Series and HD 7700 Series are not officially supported, though AMD promises they will be in a future Catalyst Windows 8 driver release.
