Nintendo To Bring GameCube Controller Support To The Wii U
Nintendo has decided to mix a bit of old school styling with a new generation video game. More specifically, Nintendo is releasing a four-port adapter for the Wii U that will allow gamers to plug in up to four GameCube controllers for its upcoming Super Smash Bros. title. It's not yet clear if the adapter will work with other titles or if it will support Nintendo's wireless Wavebird.
"Get excited! The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will be playable with GameCube controllers," Nintendo announced in a Twitter post. Nintendo also posted a video to YouTube teasing the release of both the game and the adapter. Take a look:
It looks like the adapter needs to be plugged into both USB ports on the Wii U. You can also see a plastic bezel encircling each port, which might block the wireless adapter needed for the popular Wavebird controller.

It's an interesting decision by Nintendo to bring back support for the GameCube controller, though one that makes sense. The controller became a favorite among gamers for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In addition to the original GameCube controller, the new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U will support the Wiimote, Wii U GamePad, and devices connected to the Wiimote.
