Google Maps Street View Gets Updated with 250K Miles of Road

Google's team of photography ninjas have been working overtime to add even more locales to the search giant's Street View technology in Google Maps. The result of all that hard work? Google Maps is now more robust and fleshed out than ever before, having today rolled out an update that effectively doubled the number of special photo collections and added 250,000 miles of road around the world. It's the biggest update to Google Maps since it was introduced seven years ago.

Street View coverage as been increased in the U.S. and a number of places abroad, including Macau, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, Italy, Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, and Canada. Photo collections are being added to South Africa, Japan, Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico, and other places.

"On the walls of Elsinore Castle, nestled on the northeastern coast Helsingør in Denmark, Bernardo and Francisco uttered the opening words to William Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy. The castle known locally as Kronborg and immortalized by Hamlet, provided the setting for the Prince of Denmark to play out his personal battle with madness, grief and searing rage. Today we’re also launching images from inside Kronborg and its surroundings, so you can discover for yourself the inspiration behind Shakespeare’s masterpiece," Google announced in a blog post.

Google Maps was recently booted from Apple's iOS platform as a native app, a controversial decision that hasn't been particularly well received by iPhone and iPad users. However, Google recently updated its Google Maps application on the web to include Street View functionality, so iOS 6 users can still join in the fun.
