Nintendo's pulling out all the stops with its NES Classic Edition console, especially in regards to how the more than two dozen baked in retro titles will look on your big screen TV. Utilizing your HDMI input, you'll have a standard HD-resolution gaming experience if that's what you're after, but the console will also support some old school viewing modes. Julie Gagnon, the communications manager at Nintendo of Canada, explained the different display options available on the NES Classic Edition during an interview with a French-language radio show. According to Gagnon, nostalgic gamers will have... Read more...
Nintendo needs another hardware success like the original Wii console and it's hoping its forthcoming NX console will fit the bill. Until it releases in March of next year, all we can do is speculate based on what little information Nintendo is willing to share at this point and the many rumors and supposedly leaked tidbits that find their way to the web. One of the rumors is that the NX's graphics performance will fall somewhere in between Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles. That's according to what "sources close to Nintendo" have told MCV about the NX. Apparently Nintendo is going... Read more...
The technology teardown specialists at iFixIt wasted no times getting their eager mitts on Microsoft's brand spanking new Xbox One S console, a slimmed down version of the original with a few notable upgrades, including a GPU that's clocked around 7 percent higher. So what's it like playing a real life game of Operation on the Xbox One S? It's similar to tearing into a Day One Edition Xbox One released three years ago, though not entirely the same. Things have been rejiggered in downsizing the Xbox One's physical dimensions. However, before getting inside, you'll need to remove/destroy the tampering... Read more...
Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog rejoice. During the Sonic 25th Anniversary Celebration at Comic-Con, SEGA revealed two new Sonic games: Sonic Mania and an untitled original game for release on consoles and the PC platform sometime in 2017. Sonic Mania is a 2-D, pixel-style art game. Its classic gameplay reimagines Zones and Acts from titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and Knuckles. It will also include completely new Zones, Acts, and bosses. Sonic Mania will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in the spring of 2017. The game was the... Read more...
Nintendo is going to launch a brand new game console codenamed NX in March of next year, that much we know. Beyond that, it's a big guessing game as to what exactly Nintendo is cooking up and whether it will be worth the wait, though Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot seems encouraged by what he's seen of the new hardware. "What we have seen is really great," Guillemot said during a quarterly earnings call on Tuesday. "We think having a new machine coming is going to help the industry to grow, and to take lots more casual players back to the industry." There's a lot of speculation about the NX, especially... Following rumors of a more powerful console in Sony's not-too-distant future, one that will be capable of playing games at a 4K Ultra HD resolution, the Japanese electronics maker last month opted to confirm it is indeed in development. Called PlayStation 4 Neo, the upgraded console will bring better hardware to the console scene to meet the needs of gaming on a television with four times as many pixels as a Full HD 1080p display. What's it going to take to game at 4K in the living room? A leaked internal document outlines some interesting specs of the new PS4 Neo.Before we get to that, it's worth... Read more...
Nintendo is hoping to make a splash in the game console market with its forthcoming NX system, one that can generate the kind of the reception the original Wii did rather than the Wii U, but just how big of a splash is anyone's guess at this point. We're still trying to figure out what "brand-new concept" it will bring to the table, which apparently won't include virtual reality technology. It's a little surprising that Nintendo isn't more interested in VR, considering how many view it as the next big thing in gaming. There's an eager market out there, and that would especially be true if Nintendo... Read more...
Don't expect Nintendo's next generation game console codenamed NX to trump upgraded game systems from Microsoft or Sony. That's our takeaway from comments made by Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime, who downplayed the importance of "teraflops" and "horsepower" in a response to a question about how the NX will compare to Microsoft's Project Scorpio and Sony's PS4 Neo."For us, it's not about specs, it's not about teraflops, it's not about the horsepower of a particular system," Fils-Aime told Bloomberg in an interview. "For us, it's about the content. Nintendo is a content focused company,... Read more...
There's been a lot of chatter leading up to E3 about more powerful gaming consoles designed to take advantage of the growing number of 4K televisions in the wild. Turns out the rumors were true, or at least some of them. In addition to teasing an upgraded version of the Xbox One known as Project Scorpio, which will be four times faster than the original Xbox One, Microsoft unveiled its most compact Xbox model yet, the Xbox One S. The Xbox One S is 40 percent smaller than the original Xbox One, a feat that's made even more remarkable by the fact that Microsoft was able to cram the power supply inside... Read more...
Nintendo's been remarkably tight lipped about its next generation NX game console, speaking up about it on occasion only to remind people it is in fact coming, and to throw cold water on rumors. Otherwise it's been almost all speculation up to this point, save for some supposedly inside information saying it will run on NVIDIA hardware. Short and to the point, Nintendo insider Emily Rogers (Arcade Girl) told NeoGAF's NateDrake, "NVIDIA is involved with Nintendo's future hardware." She didn't say to what extent, but the easy assumption is that NVIDIA will power the NX's graphics, which could be... Read more...
Nintendo's been working on a mysterious new game console codenamed NX, one that's been the topic of various speculation and rumors over the past year. As if any additional intrigue was needed, Nintendo revealed in its quarter financial report it will launch next year and that it will be a "brand-new concept." Let the guessing games continue. "For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed 'NX' with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally," Nintendo stated in a blurb that was buried on page three of its quarterly... Read more...
For many people, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) helped define their childhood with games Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. If it helped define yours, you might find it a punch in the gut that the NES is three decades old, having been introduced in the North American market on October 18, 1985. Time flies, doesn't it?Two years prior, Nintendo released the same console in Japan, only it was called the Famicom. However, the North American launch of the NES is a more significant blip in the history of gaming because it came during the tail end of the video game crash that rocked the... Read more...
Unless you've found a spectacular deal, there's really no reason to buy a game console that doesn't come with bundled extras, usually in the form of a free title or two. Sometimes the game bundles come in digital form, which means you won't find them at GameStop. That's because GameStop has made it a policy to not sell console bundles with digital games. The games retailer will only carry game bundles with physical copies, and if only a digital bundle exists, it will work with companies to include one. This is what took place when stores were selling Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles with a digital... Read more...
I'm the first to proudly admit I'm a PC man. Normally when I hear about "customized" gaming consoles my first response is "Hey, every PC I've built is customized." But there's something special about Microsoft's newly announced Xbox One Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition 1TB bundle.  No, snarky reader, it's not merely the $500 price tag.  Microsoft's limited edition Xbox One console, which releases this October a week prior to the launch of Halo 5: Guardians, sets my hardware lust (an internal meter which dictates how much cash I'll irrationally spend with complete disregard for logic...
