Toshiba Buys A Billion Dollar HD DVD Player

$986 million to be more precise. Why so much? It's the last one. That's the projection for the cost to Toshiba to close up shop and retool its production line to make something else. It's the final chapter for Toshiba's ill-fated attempt to offer its HD DVD alternative to Sony's Blu-ray high-definition disk player. Toshiba still turned a profit for their full fiscal year, although it was much smaller than anticipated, and that helped drive its stock price substantially lower after the report of the price tag for HD DVD funerary expenses hit the wires. The report came from the Nikkei Business Daily, not directly from Toshiba. What's Toshiba have to say about it?

"We did not announce this, and therefore we cannot comment," a Toshiba spokeswoman said.

Ouch. Why do I get the feeling that the response was given from someone hiding under a desk, in the fetal position?

The greater the risk, the greater the reward. That is, providing you succeed. When you fail, your failure is only that much greater, as demonstrated here. Toshiba really went out on a limb trying to compete with Sony. Unfortunately for Toshiba that limb was cut off by a saw named Blu-Ray and they are left with a hefty clean up bill. With nearly a billion dollars in losses there are bound to be quite a few people who will be getting pink slips, if they haven't already.

 toshibia is still offering hddvd on some of its notebooks but that will probably change soon

hd-dvd isnt completly dead i mean if its a hd-dvd burner it would rock if it was only a few bucks more than a regular dvd drive just for the ability to write extra large back up dvd's :-p

 just stockpile up some blank hd dvds that is a good idea

Wow, that's an expensive failure.  Could they be retooling this facility to make PS3's maybe?
