Pentagon and Google Street Views Do Not Mix

Google's Street View has been at the center of privacy concerns, so this is just the latest story in that chain ... but why would guards let them onto a base in the first place?

A person familiar with the matter at Fort Sam Houston said a base official twice granted Google access, but only after he was assured that Google would not videotape or photograph the historic base, which serves as a medical-training and support post. The official had believed an online map would be useful to guide visitors.

"Unfortunately, Google didn't follow the rules," said the person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the situation.

Google spokesman Larry Yu said the driver in question broke Google's strict policy of not venturing onto military bases and private property.

Some guard should be in the doghouse - or perhaps the guardhouse - over this.

Although I clearly understand why military bases shouldn't be on Google Street View, I don't see how Google Street View is an invasion of privacy. Not yet anyways. If it was in real time and you were able to zoom in to a much higher resolution, then maybe. People who think this is an invasion of privacy should consider that if this is what you get for free from Google, imagine what the government is capable of with its multi billion dollar defense budget (not to mention all the new legislation courtesy of Bush that essentially elimintates the right to privacy). Privacy is soon to be a thing of the past, if it isn't already. Just wait until every city has thousands of video cameras like London.

For the military this is a major issue. Kinda like when the Windows Live Maps showed a very clear photo of the propeller of one of the Navy's subs in drydock. Knowing the Navy, someone lost a job over that one.

should have covered up that propeller
