If the limited Surface RT wasn't up to snuff for you, hang tight -- Microsoft
's Surface Pro will be on sale soon. The software giant today announced that the Surface
Windows 8 Pro tablet will be available for purchase on Feb. 9, 2013, in the United States and Canada at all Microsoft retail stores, microsoftstore.com, Staples and Best Buy in the U.S., as well as from a number of locations in Canada. It'll ship with an Intel Core i5 CPU, and will be available in 64GB and 128GB models. Unlike the RT, this guy will actually run all of your "real" Windows 7 and Windows 8 programs. The issue, of course, is that this agility comes at a cost: the starting tag is a whopping $899.
In addition to being able to buy Surface Windows 8 Pro in the coming weeks, customers will soon be able to purchase Surface Windows RT in 13 additional markets worldwide, more than double the number of markets in which Surface is currently available. Moreover, on the RT front, the Surface RT will soon be available in a 64GB standalone version for $599, while three new Touch Cover Limited Editions in red, magenta and cyan will be sold at an estimated retail price of $129.99.
While the Surface Pro may be the hybrid device that so many avid travelers have been waiting for, will it even be competitive at such a high price point? Guess we'll have wait for those elusive sales figures...
