ATI RV560 / RV570

This morning, The Inquirer reports that ATI is prepping a more suitable answer to NVIDIA's GeForce 7600 GT in the way of a new RV560 / RV570 GPU. NVIDIA's new mainstream GPU offered performance which was very competitive with ATI's new X1800 GTO sku while being significantly cheaper to manufacture given its incredibly small die and low transistor count. Being made on a 80u process, ATI has codenamed the pieces made by TSMC RV570 and UMC's parts dubbed RV560. If you go back to our review of the ATI Radeon X1800 GTO, you'll see we were right on the money with our predictions.

"However, we would not be surprised to see a new mainstream offering coming from ATI with a smaller die consisting of fewer transistors which would be much more economical. Chances are, such a part would be coming much sooner rather than later should ATI be following our train of thought."

RV570 should be just as fast and the production cost will be much lower. Secret of the RV570 is that the chip is built on 80 nanometres and it looks like ATI might move to 80 nanometres faster than we all expected.
