Innovative Design Makes Use of Alternative Materials for Eco-Friendliness

Taipei, Taiwan, ASUS – The huge numbers of visitors present at ASUS' booth during CeBIT 2008 were treated to a dazzling display of innovative technology that included the ever-popular Eee PC, the ASUS-Lamborghini PDA handphone, and the exclusive EPU energy saving technology in the motherboard range. In addition to these new product lineups, ASUS has also included new concept products at this year's CeBIT 2008 exhibition. A leading company in the new digital era, ASUS has brought forth a new concept line that focuses on alternative material design aimed at helping save the earth. ASUS is committed to green computing, and this new lineup of concept products serves to keep users in touch with the future of environmentally friendly technology.

ASUS Bamboo Concept Series – A Mix of the Old and the New
ASUS' Bamboo concept series stands for our continuous commitment to bring cutting edge products that are sensational in all senses and forms. In nature, bamboo carries a touch of spiritual warmth with its unique tactile surface and its refreshing fragrance. In the Chinese culture, this unique character symbolizes a serene wisdom that takes the soul through a journey of aesthetic realms. It's this poetic quality of bamboo that the ASUS designers strived to convey in our product designs.

Innovative Use of Alternative Materials
With limited resources and ever increasing demand, it is vital that everyone – consumers and hardware providers included; strives to protect the environment in every possible way. ASUS' commitment to green computing has resulted in the research of alternative materials in its production of components and products. With such innovative technologies, ASUS has created an image of the future for computing – showcasing environmentally friendly designs for notebooks, LCDs and Mini PCs with bamboo as an alternative material in the manufacturing process...

Bamboo splinters in the nether regions anyone?  It might not be environmentally friendly but I think I'll stick to plastic casings.

I don't think this will catch on.

Its a neat idea -- just probably not feasible as a mainstream type of idea. The whole "harvesting bamboo" to promote this green movement seems counter-intuitive. How does ripping down live plants/trees HELP the environment thrive?

Bamboo is seen as "green" because it is a sustainable resource that can be fully ready to harvest after just 5 years of growth. Compared to other types of hardwoods this is a very short amount of time. Not only that but it is biodegradable. The primary ingredient in most plastics is crude oil and they of course aren't biodegradable. An interesting thought, but I think it would make a bigger difference if they tried to make laptops more efficient and use less energy. Unfortunately it has become a common marketing strategy of many companies to make things that appear to be "green" but aren't really significantly more environmentally friendly.

Yeah, bamboo is technically a grass, and as I know from my back yard, it grows like a weed. It also doesn't splinter at all, so Methious needn't worry when he rubs the computer all over himself.

Bamboo has good flexibility too :)..

Anyways I was hoping for that laptop to have the keyboard made of bamboo as well, or maybe just painted to look like bamboo.. That'd be sweet :p

Right on man!...I agree ^_^. If it was all bamboo...I would consider nabbing one if I ever needed a laptop...fricking sweet. Also, who knows, maybe one day I'll be stranded on a deserted island, if I have my bamboo laptop with me...a spare use of firewood =P....Multiple applications people!...rofl...

For when you are trying to squeeze your laptop into that already tightly packed suitcase when going to the airport -- can maybe just fold it in half or quarters :)
