Nintendo 2DS Portable Gaming Console Price Reduced To $99
The cost of entry to own a modern generation DS console has been lowered to a Benjamin. Actually, just shy of a Benny -- Nintendo dropped the price of its 2DS handheld to $99.99, down from its previous suggested retail price of $129.99. And in case you're wondering, yes, it still comes bundled with Mario Kart 7 (in digital form).
"At a suggested retail price of $99.99, Nintendo 2DS is an even more attractive introductory option for first-time gamers," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "The new lower-priced hardware combined with the strong lineup of new games launching this year and arguably the best library of games in this generation makes it a great time to be a Nintendo fan."
Nintendo launched the 2DS in October 2013 as a relatively affordable option for casual gamers and those new to Nintendo's ecosystem. It plays almost all of the available 3DS titles, though obviously they're limited to two dimensions on the 2DS. It also plays most regular DS titles.
The 2DS doesn't have hinges like the 3DS, so it doesn't open and close. According to Nintendo, that also makes it sturdier, and therefor better suited for young children. Though it's designed differently and doesn't support glass-free 3D visuals, 2DS owners can engage in co-op gaming with 3DS owners, either online or with an Internet connection or locally.
Nintendo's price drop comes as summer is winding down and the holiday shopping season comes into view.
