More Powerful PlayStation 4 Neo Tipped For September 7th Unveil In New York
Microsoft has had its time to shine in the spotlight with the release of its 40 percent smaller Xbox One S, and next month will be Sony’s time to capture the attention of both the press and gamers. According to VICE Gaming, the upcoming PlayStation 4 refresh will be unveiled on September 7th.
The console, which we have been dubbing PlayStation 4 Neo or PS4 Neo, is a more powerful successor to the PlayStation 4. Sony first confirmed the existence of the PS4 Neo back in early June, with Sony chief executive Andrew House stating, “It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4. We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”
House went on to add, “All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4.”
In mid-July, internal documents relating to the PS4 Neo were leaked onto the internet. The docs revealed that the PS4 Neo still features eight AMD Jaguar cores, but they are now running at 2.1GHz instead of 1.6GHz. And the GCN compute units have been doubled from 18 to 36, while clock speeds have increase from 800MHz to 911MHz. Sony says that this will result in a 2.3x performance in FLOPs (or Floating Point performance).
Sony promises that the PS4 Neo will bring 4K support for those that own UHDTVs, while even those with HDTVs will be able to take advantage of higher and more stable framerates, improved graphics fidelity and more GPU-intensive graphics features due to the added CPU and GPU horsepower.
VICE Gaming is also indicating that the actual unveil will be a “technical showcase” and that development kits will be shipped out shortly after. And according to the leaked Sony documentation, nearly all new PS4 titles released during October 2016 and beyond will support both the original PS4 and the PS4 Neo.
