Apple’s iPhone 6S And iPhone 6S Plus To Gain ‘Force Touch’ Display

Apple just held a pretty big event on Monday, during which it launched a 12-inch MacBook, revised MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs, a price cut on the Apple TV, and pricing details on the much hyped Apple Watch family. With all of the news and speculation surrounding those products now out the windows, it shouldn’t take a brain surgeon to guess what’s next on the agenda. That’s right, more speculation and rumors on the next generation iPhones that are due out in the fall.

The Wall Street Journal is leading the charge, asserting that the iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus refresh, which will likely be called iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, will gain the Force Touch technology that was introduced on the all-new MacBook. The MacBook uses a Force Touch trackpad that promised to deliver a “uniform click no matter where you press the surface.” The Force Touch trackpad also provides haptic feedback to correspond to the actions taking place on the screen. The pressure sensors built-in to the trackpad also provide for unique functionality, such as a harder press on a seek button in your media player resulting in quicker advancing of the music you’re listening to or video that you’re watching.

The Wall Street Journal indicates that similar functionality, which is also found in the Apple Watch, would directly transfer over to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. The publication indicates that it gleaned this information from members of Apple’s massive supply chain, but it cautions that Force Touch “ultimately may not be included in a product for a variety of reasons.”

Given its use in the MacBook, 13-inch MacBook Pro (2015), and the Apple Watch, Force Touch seems like an absolute shoe-in for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Plus. And we’d be pretty surprised if Apple didn’t also throw in a 64-bit A9 processor and at least 2GB of RAM this time around (the iPhone family has been stuck at 1GB since the iPhone 5 was released back in 2012). And perhaps Apple can manage to cram in the optical image stabilization (OIS) from the larger 5.5-inch model into the 4.7-inch model.

On a lighter note, the publication is also reporting that pink will join silver, gold and space gray, which are currently available on both models of the iPhone 6.
