When ASUS released the ZenFone 2 Laser, the company’s goal was to offer a premium smartphone experience with strong camera performance at an affordable price. On the surface the ZenFone 2 Laser has many of the key features of a premium phone, including an octa-core SoC with Adreno graphics, dual active SIM capabilities, a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel camera, and a removable battery. Given that many flagship Android phones sell for $599 and up for an unlocked version, ASUS’s price of $249 for the high-end 32GB model of the ZenFone 2 Laser is very reasonable. If you want to save some cash,... Read more...
Talk of new phones usually have a tendency to trend towards whatever Apple and Samsung are cooking up, like the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7, but at least one competitor refuses to be overlooked. That competitor is LG Mobile, and through a series of weird and funky images and animated GIFs, the company demands that you know its newest flagship—the G5—is debuting a day ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on February 21, 2016.The strangely captivating invitations feature floating balloon animals, a toy airplane with a spinning propeller, a walking toy robot, a bouncing blob wearing a party... As we've talked about a number of times in the past, Google is very keen on taking good advantage of deep-learning to help accomplish some amazing things. Its latest venture could affect us in a very direct way: by making it easier to search for specific photos in our collection. Object identification is already a big part of Google's business; it's why the company's search engine is so eerily accurate at times. It knows the difference between "small" and "large", different types of very similar objects, colors, and so forth. With a partnership with Movidius, which is headquartered in San Mateo,... One of the most ambitious features Microsoft has packed into Windows 10 Mobile is Continuum, which lets users plug their smartphone into a dock, and then take advantage of it as if it were a PC, complete with mouse, keyboard, and monitor. It's a niche feature, but for those who could take advantage of it, it can prove to be a real boon to on-the-go productivity. Up to this point, Continuum has required beefier hardware to work, such as the hardware featured on the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. Microsoft has now added another SoC to the list: Qualcomm's MS8952, also known as the Snapdragon 617. At the moment,... Read more...
While companies like Apple are actually reducing the battery capacity across the board for its flagship smartphones (and in the process, maintaining the status quo with respects to battery life), we’re happy to see that other manufactures are willing to give customers more when it comes to runtimes. One such company is Chinese smartphone OEM Xiaomi, which recently took the wraps of its Redmi 3. The most impressive feature about the Redmi 3 is that it seems to be mostly battery — inside, you’ll find a massive 4100mAh lithium-ion power source with quick charging support. For comparison, the previous... Read more...
Back in September, Apple released a tool to the Google Play Store that helped users transfer all of their important information from an Android device over to an iOS one. To date, that app hasn't garnered the greatest of reviews, with most of the ire coming from fans of the less restrictive platform. While Apple allows users to move from Android to iOS, though, it hasn't up to this point made it easy for those who want to switch from its side over to Android. According to the EU, this could be one of the biggest reasons why we don't see many users switch from the iPhone to an Android device,... Read more...
Samsung has a new boss in charge of its mobile division, D.J. Koh, and the pressure's on to turn things around after a series of missteps that led to a changing of the guard. His first real test will be the impending launch of Samsung's Galaxy S7 handset, an as-yet unannounced phone that's rumored to ship with a 5.7-inch display.Previous rumors pointed to a 5.5-inch display for the Galaxy S7, though based on a screenshot showing the phone's specs, it appears that Samsung plans to roll with a 5.7-inch display instead, at least for one of the models -- there's been chatter that Samsung could release... For some, one of the most useful updates to hit Android 5.0 'Lollipop' was the notification tweaker. With it, you can block different types of communications when you don't want to be disturbed, but still let important stuff through. Making this feature even more useful is the ability to lift the blocks automatically at a certain time, such as in the early AM when you are getting ready for your day. This "Set until next alarm" feature is undoubtedly useful, and perhaps even important, for many. So you can imagine the faces of those who need it when they load up the notification pane and see that... Read more...
Well, this isn't something we see too often. Hot on the heels of the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow for its Moto X Pure 2015, Motorola has decided to release the smartphone's kernel sources to the wild. As you might imagine, this isn't a move that's going to affect end-users right now. Instead, access to these sources is ideal for developers looking to do a variety of different things, including adjusting the OS, optimizing it, or overhauling the ROM entirely. With sources simply handed out like this, it makes a developer's job a bit easier. In time, this release can affect end-users once developers... Read more...
Have you ever wondered at what point a smartphone officially doubles as a tablet? The answer is 6 inches. We're declaring it official because hey, why not? Also, that's the size of the display on Samsung's new Galaxy A9 handset unveiled in China yesterday. To put that into perspective, Amazon sells a 6-inch version of its Fire HD tablet. Size matters, but so does resolution and unfortunately the Galaxy A9's massive display is only 1920x1080 (Full HD 1080p). That's certainly serviceable, though not particularly exciting, given all that physical real estate. On the bright side (literally), it's a... Read more...
The original Google Nexus 5 shipped right around this time two full years ago. Much has evolved in the smartphone space in the 24 months since then, but little has changed in terms of branding with this latest LG-built Nexus device. The 5.2-inch Nexus 5X we will be showing you here is positioned as the mainstream Nexus phone in the Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) lineup, with an unlocked base price of only $379, though street prices are actually lower. Nexus 5X on the left; Nexus 6P on the right Put simply, the Nexus 5X is designed for mainstream smartphone users, looking for a strong value. Google... Read more...
Be sure to check out our Lumia 950 review here... Microsoft rolling out an update to one of its OSes isn't often that big of a deal, because let's be honest, it happens all the time. An update just issued for Windows 10 Mobile is a bit of an exception. Not because of what it actually introduces (or fixes); but because of how it was released. Typically, any mobile OS update needs to go through the carrier that sold a customer their phone, and often, that can take a long time. Thanks to Apple's tightly-run ecosystem, there's never a delay there, but on Android, many will never see the latest... Read more...
The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are important products for Microsoft, but not for the reasons you may expect. Microsoft isn’t trying to set the mobile market ablaze with these two smartphones. They are not necessarily meant to be explosive sales successes that take significant market share from Android and iOS. If they were, Microsoft would have thrown huge amounts of marketing muscle and dollars behind them, launched a massive advertising campaign, and worked deals with every major wireless carrier it could. But Microsoft didn't.  The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are more about laying a foundation and setting... Read more...
We saw this move coming from a mile away. It’s hard as hell to break into the smartphone OS market, especially with dominant players like Android and iOS taking up a lion’s share of the market. Even existing players that once had sizable piece of the pie — i.e. Windows Phone and BlackBerry — have seen their market share drop down to the low single-digit realm (or lower in the case of BlackBerry). With that in mind, Mozilla already had an uphill battle to fight. Earlier this year, the company announced that it was cancelling its effort to produce a $25 Firefox phone. The company explained that having... Read more...
