For years, the notion of a tablet replacing one's laptop was a novel idea, but hardly feasible. Much has changed in recent times, however, with Microsoft going so far as to claim that its newest Surface units are indeed powerful enough to take the place of a bonafide laptop. It's that push that has gotten the attention of the entire industry, with everyone from Lenovo to Asus and now Dell pushing out potent 2-in-1 units that manage to straddle the line between slate and laptop with very little compromise. The Inspiron 13 7000 is Dell's latest two-faced unit, and the one we're testing is a top-spec... The engineering wizards at Apple have designed a laptop that's lighter than Air...the MacBook Air, that is. It's the new MacBook (early 2015 edition), a forward-thinking laptop that measures just 11.04 inches (W) by 7.74 inches (D) by 0.14-0.52 inches (H), and weighs a mere 2.03 pounds. The super thin and light profile is what prompted Apple's clever tagline, "Light. Years ahead."At 2.38 pounds, the 11.6-inch MacBook Air is slightly heavier than the 12-inch MacBook we'll be showing you here. It's also marginally thicker at its highest point (0.68 inches), though a tad thinner where it tapers off... Read more...
Before you even think about shopping for an Apple MacBook Pro for professional chores on the go, Dell wants you to give a long, hard look at its recently redesigned Precision M3800 Mobile Workstation. According to Dell, the M3800 is a superior product in several ways, and the OEM even put together an infographic showing more than half a dozen reasons why its 15.6-inch laptop is a better solution than Apple's. Assuming you opted for the optional 4K Ultra HD touch display with second generation IGZO technology, one of those reasons is more on-screen real estate. A lot more. The M3800 equipped as... If you don't want to pay full price for a Surface Pro 3 tablet, then all you need is a little patience. We say this because Microsoft is pretty good about running sales and promotions on a fairly consistent basis, though some have a tendency to slip under the radar since there's usually no announcement. For example, you can currently score a select Surface Pro 3 for $150 off retail, though you won't find a press release or Microsoft blog post promoting the sale.At present, it's the Core i5 model with 256GB of storage that's on sale. It's currently marked down to $1,149 versus its normal selling... Read more...
Many wonderful things can be and have been said about the Raspberry Pi — it's adroitness as a programming learning tool, its remarkably low cost-of-entry, the strong and varied community that has developed around it, the user creativity it inspires, its oh-so-oh-so-cool factor — but one thing never said is that it provides a clean, well-contained user computing experience. That's because, well, it doesn't. The truth is that the typical Raspberry Pi system is precisely the opposite, presenting as a chaotic jumble of cables, cords, wires, USB hubs, peripheral devices, and various... Read more...
HP used the Mobile World Congress event currently taking place in Barcelona, Spain to launch what may be one of the company’s most exciting notebooks ever, the Spectre X360. Like the previous-generation Spectre, the new X360 is a thin and light premium, multi-mode convertible ultrabook, but HP has paid special attention to almost every detail on this new device and improved upon its predecessor in virtually every way. HP worked closely with Microsoft and its hardware partners to choose the right components and optimize the software on the Spectre X360 and the company made some practical decisions... Read more...

Asus announced the super slim Zenbook UX305 during the IFA trade show in Berlin in September. This ultrabook will be available in two models: one with a 1920x1080 IPS display and one with a QHD+ display that boasts a resolution of 3200x1800. Asus claims the latter model is the world’s slimmest 13.3-inch QHD+ laptop. The UX305 is powered by the new Intel Core M processor which was built for ultra-thin, fanless form factors. The Core M offers some significant advances for both power consumption and performance and enables the thin design found on the UX305. This ultrabook features an all-aluminum... Read more...
It was a year ago this month that Sony sold its VAIO PC business to investment firm Japan Industrial Partners Inc., thus signaling a likely end to the VAIO brand in the U.S., at least on computers. Is that still the case? We're not sure, though in Japan, a pair of new VAIO Z convertible laptops is launching. The VAIO Z represents a new start for the VAIO brand -- the "Z" stands for "zero." It's not clear what this new start will mean for markets outside of Japan, but in the immediate future, the forthcoming VAIO Z and VAIO Z Canvas are a couple of interesting looking laptops.... Do you want a rugged laptop or do you prefer a thin and light notebook? Typically you had to choose between one or the other, though Panasonic is looking to change the game with its new Toughbook CF-54, a semi-rugged system that's the thinnest and lightest Toughbook in its category. So, it has that going for it, but it's also well equipped with the latest 5th Generation Intel Core i5-5300U vPro CPU. The Toughbook CF-54 is a 14-inch laptop with HD (1366x768) and Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) display options, the latter of which uses an In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel with glove-enabled... Read more...
Dell's new XPS 13 has been compared to Apple's MacBook Air because of its thin stature and overall aesthetic design. However, it's not just the operating system and spec sheet that separates these two laptops, there's also a big divide when it comes to in-home repair. Getting at the guts of a MacBook Air is more challenging than it should be, while the XPS 13 is decidedly easier to open and operate on, according to the latest teardown analysis by iFixIt. There are several different configurations to choose from when ordering the XPS 13, all of them based on Intel's Broadwell-U platform. We recently... Read more...
Dell has updated what it claims is the world's thinnest and lightest mobile workstation, the Precision M3800. Checking in at a svelte 0.31-0.71 (H) by 14.65 (W) by 10 (D) inches and weighing only 4.15 pounds, we won't argue that claim, though what's equally impressive is the collection of hardware and features. Stealing the show is a 15.6-inch UltraSharp touch display with a 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) resolution and IGZO2 technology, along with Corning Gorilla Glass for added durability. The upgraded display gives road warriors the ability to view their work in much higher detail, along... Read more...
Lenovo's Thinkpad 540 is a beast, but you didn't need us to tell you that. This professional-caliber laptop is probably more powerful than your average desktop PC. And if its price doesn't tip you off to the fact that this laptop is sporting some serious hardware—$1,600 for Lenovo's "ready to ship" iteration of the laptop; starting at $1,400 for the customize-it-yourself iteration—then the system's spec sheet will surely give it away.  When loaded up with the high-end hardware inside our the system, the Thinkpad 540 inches past $2,500, easily.Yet, for all of this...
